Rescue dog training

Rescue dogs often come with unique challenges due to their past experiences, such as neglect, abandonment, or trauma. At Shaman's Way, we provide specialised training for rescue dogs using a holistic approach combined with positive reinforcement techniques to address unwanted behaviours and help them adjust to their new homes.

Why traditional training falls short

Traditional training methods often focus on obedience and surface-level behaviour management. While these may provide temporary solutions, they fail to address the deeper emotional and psychological roots of a rescue dog's behaviour.

How I can help with rescue dog training.

01. Initial Assessment:

Evaluate the dog's history, temperament, and any signs of fear, anxiety, or aggression.

02. Building Trust and Bonding:

Spend time creating a safe and secure environment to help the dog feel comfortable.

03. Establishing a Safe Space:

Provide a designated area (crate, bed, or room) where the dog can retreat and feel secure.

04. Basic Obedience Training:

Teach essential commands like “sit,” “stay,” “come,” and “leave it” using positive reinforcement.

05. Socialisation:

Gradually introduce the dog to new people, environments, and other animals in a controlled way.

06. Desensitisation to Triggers:

Slowly expose the dog to stimuli that cause fear or anxiety (e.g., loud noises, other dogs) in a non-threatening manner.

07. Leash Training:

Introduce the leash gently and encourage calm behaviour while wearing it.

08. Addressing Problem Behaviours:

For behaviours like barking, chewing, or jumping, identify the root cause (e.g., boredom, fear) and redirect the dog to appropriate activities.

09. Confidence Building:

Introduce simple activities like puzzle toys, basic agility tasks, or new environments to build confidence.

10. Routine and Consistency:

Establish a predictable daily routine for feeding, walking, playtime, and rest.

11. Patience and Adaptation:

Understand that progress may be slow and setbacks are normal and continue practising learned behaviours to reinforce positive habits.
